Workshop outline

This workshop is offered by Ako Aotearoa in partnership with ADHD New Zealand.

ADHD New Zealand, supported by the Tertiary Education Commission, has developed eLearning modules to help tertiary educators better support their learners with ADHD.

This workshop will help participants develop a deeper understanding of the specific challenges tertiary learners with ADHD face, and explore strategies that can support them to have a more positive learning experience.

  • What is ADHD?
  • What are the 10 myths about ADHD?
  • Challenges faced by learners with ADHD.
  • Accommodations and strategies to support learners with ADHD.

About the facilitator

Darrin Bull

Darrin Bull Darrin Bull is the chair of ADHD New Zealand, a role which he has held for over eight years. During his time as chair, the organisation has become more focused on advocating for better access to diagnosis and support for the ADHD community, improving understanding of ADHD and removing stigma.

Darrin contributed to the development of the modules on ADHD for tertiary educators, as a focus group facilitator and content writer. He comes from a family with lived experience of ADHD and autism and brings this personal experience to his role.

Suzanne Cookson

Suzanne Cookson Suzanne Cookson is the Chief Executive of ADHD NZ. Improving educational achievement for those with ADHD is a key focus for her. In addition to being involved in developing the modules for tertiary educators, Suzanne is working on modules for primary and secondary teachers, to be launched in 2023. She is also interested in the pathways between the education and health sectors, so that people can receive the support they need.

Suzanne has lived experience of neurodiversity in her family, which gives her an insight into the challenges many people with ADHD and their whānau face.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this workshop you will be able to:

  • recognise and describe some of the challenges learners with ADHD face in the tertiary education environment, and why these challenges occur
  • apply strategies in your teaching practice to mitigate some of these challenges.

This workshop is for anyone who works with learners with ADHD and would like to learn how to support them better.
